WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

THE GAP

Research shows that on average, women use 12–16 personal hygiene, beauty, and care items every single day — shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, skincare, menstrual products, hair tools, and more. These needs are not “nice to have.” They are essential to a woman’s dignity, health, and confidence.

But for many women and girls in Omaha, the cost of these items is out of reach.

THE NEED

In Nebraska, around 11% of women live below the poverty line, and single mothers face poverty rates of 27–32%.

Nationally, 1 in 4 students struggles to afford menstrual products, leading to missed school, embarrassment, and stress.

Local organizations consistently list tampons, pads, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, hair-care tools, ethnic hair products, brushes, lotion, nail polish, and beauty items among their highest needs.

Unlike food, hygiene products cannot be purchased with SNAP or WIC benefits — creating a huge unmet need.

WHY IT MATTERS

A girl who can’t afford deodorant is less likely to attend school confidently.
A woman who can’t afford pads might have to miss work.
A teen without hair-care items might withdraw socially.
A mother without hygiene essentials might feel shame trying to access resources.

When girls and women don’t have what they need, their opportunities shrink.

When they do have what they need, their confidence grows, their participation increases, and their sense of dignity is restored.

Two Women Smiling
“These kind of shows of support in the form of personal care items and period products mean you are seen, you are valued, you are important.”
